A haunting BBC drama based on the real crimes of a notorious serial killer is making its way to Netflix.
Ripper Street, which ran from 2012 to 2016, began in 1889 five months after the ‘final’ killing of Jack the Ripper, who is believed to have murdered five women over five months in the Whitechapel area of London.
The first series followed Detective Inspector Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) and Detective Sergeant Bennet Drake (Jerome Flynn) as they team up with US Army surgeon and Pinkerton agent Captain Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg) to reopen the case as more bodies begin piling up.
Over the series that followed, Ripper Street continued to follow the detective team as they investigated several cases, from a freak train accident, gory murders, and the mysterious case of the Whitechapel Golem.
After previously airing on BBC for series one and two, it was announced a third season would not be released due to low viewing figures.

Amazon Prime Video resurrected Ripper Street in 2014, airing a third, fourth, and fifth series before wrapping the show in 2016.

Now, all five seasons will be available in one place – Netflix – from April 4.
Ripper Street, which also starred MyAnna Buring, currently sits at an average 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with its fifth and final season earning a rare 100% score.
The critic’s consensus for the first season reads: ‘Gritty, sinister, and visually striking, Ripper Street is a gripping thriller, with well-crafted characters and compellingly lurid plotlines.’
The Telegraph said in its review: ‘It’s gathering to a crescendo beautifully, all slow-burning emotion and fog-shrouded foreboding.’
Den Of Geek added: ‘Ripper Street has steadily become a more consistently good show during its runtime and if the current trajectory holds, it will finish its time with us on a considerable high.’
‘Ripper Street is a well-acted, well-written and compelling mystery series. And even better, there’s no waiting around, wishing it would improve. It’s alluring from the start,’ The Hollywood Reporter wrote.

IGN Movies added: ‘The chemistry between the three men is palpable, the acting superlative and the seeds of each of their backstories intriguing enough to warrant a consistent week-to-week tune in to see how they unfold.’

Speaking to Metro in 2017, Ripper Street executive producer Will Gould revealed his favourite twists from the show, including the shocking death of one beloved character.
‘[They were] doomed from the start, and so it came to pass. [Their] line “I am made of naught but death” hung over [them] like a dark cloud throughout series four, until his time in the catacombs put it all to an end,’ he said.
‘It’s like it had to happen, it was inevitable, but of course, none of us relished it. There wasn’t a dry eye on set.’
